CATHOLIC MISSION IN UGANDA
CONSTRUCTION OF FAMILY HOUSES FOR THE POOR
Poverty in the Karamoja region is among the deepest in East Africa. Many families live in simple huts made of wood, branches and straw, which often do not provide even basic protection from the weather . Due to extreme poverty, most are unable to build or repair their own homes.
LIFE ON THE EDGE OF EXISTENCE
According to data from UN agencies and relevant reports:
About 61% of Karamoja's population lives below the poverty line .
Recent estimates show that the number is growing and that today around 74% of people live in poverty.
A large proportion of families live in extreme insecurity, without access to stable income and basic infrastructure .
In such circumstances, the mission regularly visits villages and identifies the families who are most vulnerable — widows, the elderly, the sick, and families with many children . We help them build simple but safe houses that provide them with a dignified home and basic security.
Thanks to the kindness and support of many donors from our homeland, we have so far built or provided materials for more than 30 families, giving them the opportunity for a new beginning and a life worthy of a human being.

TYPICAL FAMILY HOUSE IN MOROTO
These photographs show the creation of a typical family home in the Moroto area – a modest home built from wood and straw, with the help of the community and their own hands. Such a house provides a family with basic protection from the elements and a place of safety, but at the same time shows how fragile and dependent life is in this area.
